After three decades of expansion, the average size of a
new home is down more than 80 square feet from the peak
of 2,521 square feet in 2007. In 1973, the typical single family
home was a modest 1,600 square foot, one story ranch. New
single family homes built in 2009 also had fewer bedrooms
and bathrooms than previously.
