U.S.
May housing starts (released June 16) fell 10% to 593,000 units (SAAR). Total single family starts sank 17.2% to 468,000 units, while multi-family rose 33%. Total U.S. permits, an indicator of future construction, declined almost 6% to 574,000 units (SAAR).
Starts increased in 2 regions:
- Northeast (- 6.3%)
- Midwest (+ 4.9%)
- South (- 21.3%)
- West (+ 10.8%)

Canada
May housing starts (released June 8) fell to 189,100 units, down 6% over April (SAAR). Total urban starts decreased 9.5% in May, with urban multiples down 5.6% and urban singles down 14.1%. Total rural starts soared to 239,000 units.

- Atlantic Provinces (+ 23.3%)
- Quebec (- 13%)
- Ontario (- 2.7%)
- Prairie Provinces (- 21.8%)
